Dear Friends in Christ Jesus,<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Today we continue our meditations on \u201cLife in the Body of Christ\u201d written by Rev. Mark Smith, Lutheran Church Canada\u2019s Director of International Missions. Our first meditation is titled:<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Fellowship: A Communion of Saints
\n\u201cWe, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. (Romans 12:5)<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
When Christ calls you, He does not call you alone. He brings you into a family \u2013 a fellowship, a communion, a holy assembly. The Church is not simply a gathering of individuals; it is the body of Christ, a people redeemed by grace, bound together by faith, and called to live in holy communion with God and with one another.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This fellowship is not built on common interests or human compatibility. It is built on Christ. You are united to your fellow believers not by your effort, but by the Spirit who baptized you all into one body (1 Corinthians 12:13). Whether strong or weak, old or young, near or far, every Christian is a member of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. Together, we are saints and sinners, gathered at the foot of the same cross.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
One Body, Many Members
\nThe Church is diverse in its members but united in its Head. As Paul writes, \u201cThe eye cannot say to the hand, \u2018I have no need of you\u2019\u201d (1 Corinthians 12:21). Every Christian matters. Every member has a place. No one is insignificant, and no one is self-sufficient.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This fellowship is lived out most visibly in the local congregation, where we gather around Word and Sacrament and are formed into a community shaped by forgiveness and love. Here we learn to rejoice with one another, suffer with one another, bear each other\u2019s burdens, encourage the fainthearted, forgive those who sin against us, and to delight in the gifts God has given.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The Bond of Peace and Truth
\nChristian fellowship is not grounded in vague unity or emotional sentiment. It is rooted in the truth of the Gospel. We are united in one confession of faith, anchored in the same Lord, and guided by the same doctrine. True unity flows not from minimizing truth but from sharing the truth in love.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Yet this unity is also lived gently, in humility, patience, and forgiveness. The peace of Christ is not achieved through silence or avoidance, but through repentance, reconciliation, and the forgiveness that Christ Himself gives.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This life together is not always easy. Sin still clings to us. Misunderstandings arise. Wounds are inflicted. Yet in the Church, we are given a gift the world cannot imitate: the grace to forgive as we have been forgiven, and to begin again as brothers and sisters in Christ.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
A Foretaste of the Feast to Come
\nIn the Sacrament, we receive the body and blood of Christ, not only as individuals, but as a body joined together in one holy communion. The fellowship we share at the altar is far greater than what our eyes can see. Here the Church militant on earth is united with the Church triumphant in heaven, for there is only one Church of Christ.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Where Christ is, there also is His kingdom. And where His kingdom is, the saints who have gone before us are present, rejoicing with us around the throne of the Lamb. Together we join the angels and archangels in their heavenly song, \u201cHoly, Holy, Holy.\u201d Even when only two or three are gathered together, what looks to human eyes like a humble gathering is, in truth, participation in the eternal liturgy of Christ\u2019s kingdom, where all His faithful are gathered into His presence.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
You are not alone. You belong to Christ, and in Him, you belong to His kingdom.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Prayer
\nGracious Lord, You have called me into the fellowship of Your Son and knit me together with all who share in His grace. Help me to love my fellow members, to bear with them in patience, to speak the truth in love, and to rejoice in the unity You give through Word and Sacrament. Strengthen Your Church, O Lord, and keep us steadfast in faith and love until we are gathered at last in perfect communion around Your throne. Amen.<\/p>\n

\u201cBehold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!\u201d (Psalm 133:1)<\/p>\n

PRAYER: A Living Conversation
\n\u201cCall upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.\u201d (Psalm 50:15)<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Prayer is not a performance, a ritual formula, or a way of earning God\u2019s favour. Prayer is a gift. It is the living conversation of God\u2019s favour. Prayer is a gift. It is the living conversation of God\u2019s children with their heavenly Father. Because Christ has reconciled you to God, you have the right to call on Him at all times and in every need. You are no stranger at His door; you are His beloved child, and He delights to hear your voice.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Prayer is the living conversation between a child and their Father, between the redeemed and their Redeemer. It begins not with your words, but with God\u2019s Word and promises. He has spoken first in His Word, and prayer is your response. And like a father bending low to listen to the cries of His children, God not only invites you to turn to Him but urges you to \u201cCall upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me\u201d (Psalm 50:15).<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The Spirit\u2019s Intercession
\nPrayer is not a burden placed on weak shoulders. The Holy Spirit Himself helps us in our weakness, interceding for us with groans too deep for words (Romans 8:26). Even when your prayers falter, even when you cannot find the words, your sighs are heard. The Spirit carries them to the Father through the Son, and they return as mercy and help in time of need.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This means that prayer is not limited to eloquent words or set times. It is woven into the rhythm of daily life. At table or bedside, in work or rest, in joy or sorrow, your heart may rise to God. Prayer does not make Him nearer \u2013 He is already near \u2013 but it makes you more aware of His presence and His care.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Through prayer, you also bring others before God. You lift up the suffering, the lost, the joyful, the struggling. You pray for the Church, for the world, for your enemies, and for those you love. And when you do no know what to say, you can still fold your hands, bow your head, and say: \u201cLord, have mercy.\u201d The Holy Spirit knows what is in your heart and will pray for you.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Taught by our Saviour
\nJesus not only teaches us to pray but prays with us and for us. In the Lord\u2019s Prayer, He gives us the very words to carry on our lips, words that shape all our petitions according to His will. Each phrase is a treasure: the Father\u2019s name hallowed, His kingdom coming, His will being done, daily bread supplied, sins forgiven, temptations resisted, and evil overcome.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
When you pray the Lord\u2019s Prayer, you pray not alone but with the whole Church on earth and in heaven. And Christ Himself always makes intercession for you, as our great High Priest, before the throne of the Father (Hebrews 7:25).<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Boldness and Confidence
\nBecause of Christ, you can come to the Father in prayer with boldness and confidence (Ephesians 3:12). You need not fear rejection or doubt whether your prayers are worthy. In Christ, they are received with delight. Even the simplest cry, \u201cLord, have mercy,\u201d resounds in heaven.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Prayer is not magic, nor is it a way to manipulate God into serving our desires. It is the humble surrender of our will to His, trusting that His wisdom is far greater and His mercy deeper than our requests. And yet, this surrender does not weaken prayer \u2013 it strengthens it. For our Father delights to hear His children and has promised to grant us what we need according to His will. Therefore, we can approach Him with confidence and boldness, knowing He is faithful; and we can rest securely, knowing that even when His answers differ from our desires, it is always for our good and His glory.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Prayer
\nHeavenly Father, You invite me to call upon You as Your dear child. Teach me to pray with faith, confidence, and joy. Hear me in my weakness, forgive me in my sin, and shape my will according to Yours. Let my prayers rise before You like incense and let my life be lived in constant conversation with You, through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.<\/p>\n
